Best of the Fest: Community Collaborations

If there is anything that 2020 taught us - it’s the power of art and story to connect communities across time and space. As we return to our in-person programming in 2021 with Shifting Patterns we’re using a shared love of art and film to reconnect with our neighbours and communities.

We’re very excited to be bringing you two extra special events, created and designed in collaboration with some outstanding local grassroots community organisations.

If you’re all about community and connecting in a meaningful way, these two standout evenings are for you

Immerse yourself in a night of deep conversation, music and film at Blaxcellence: Film In Focus. Blaxcellence is a grassroots organisation that aims to connect black identifying creatives who live, work and play in the South-East and Western suburbs of Melbourne to rebuild a sustainable and connected creative Community.

This event is a melting pot of artistic excellence, featuring two short films, a pre-screening musical performance by Tébir and a spoken word performance by artist Awak Kongor.

Hang around Loop Bar afterwards to meet the artists and revel in conversation.

There is no doubt this event will be a highlight of the festival with a rich afternoon of music, film, ceremony and community. Presented in collaboration with the Footscray Community Arts Centre our Westside Event is an opportunity to enjoy the best of this community.

Participate in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and enjoy the soothing sounds of Daniel Seifu, a professionally trained Ethiopian jazz musician.

The film Found in a Dream will be preceded by a discussion with Melbourne-based Ethiopian director Helen Kassa and actor Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi.

In the spirit of community, this event is presented in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council and is free for all Maribyrnong residents.
