He is a Lead Artist and Sound Designer for WEYA where his work has been incredibly diverse. In 2012 he worked on the Chronicles project, culminating in travelling to the remote Beagle Bay Aboriginal Community in Western Australia to create performance with young people. As a member of the Edge Ensemble, Rexson has performed in Fate (FCAC, 2013), Fate 2.0 (Arts Centre, 2014), Scheherazade (FCAC, 2014), Iago (Malthouse 2015) and Caliban (Malthouse 2016). He has performed in countless productions for WEYA since first joining as a participant at fourteen years of age, worked as a Support Artist with WEYA for St Albans Edge, Geelong Edge and Footscray Edge and is now a Sound Designer, Composer and Lead Artist for the company. He first became interested in acting when he was roped into a short film project as part of an after school program in 2007. Eli the Invincible, in which Michael stared alongside his younger brother Elijah, was an award winning short film featured on SBS, about a young wrestling fan trying to make sense of the racial violence surrounding him. Michael went on to work on several other short films, including Hiders (2013), and Burning of the Mekong (2016), before being cast as Tank in the feature film Is This The Real World in 2015. Michael’s training includes a year with Verve Studios culminating in a season of With You, Alone in 2014. Michael became involved in Western Edge Youth Arts in 2016 and played the role of Private Detective Fatu in TEK as part of the Phoenix Edge ensemble. Born in Auckland, raised in Broadmeadows, and proud of his Samoan cultural heritage, Michael worked on the script for Hamlet (2016), translating sections of this inter-cultural retelling of the classic text into Samoan language. Her earliest memories of performing include forcing her parents to listen to pitchy renditions of Disney classics, whilst smashing the keys of a small Casio piano. To this day, it is no different, but she would like to think her artistry has improved. Leigh joined WEYA’s Wyndham Edge in 2018, and played the lead role in the ensemble’s original piece ‘TIG; a recontextualised version of the ancient Greek tragedy, Antigone. I later managed crown land and coasts across Gippsland and was CEO of Gippsland Ports. I studied sustainable development, rural and regional planning at Aberdeen University in Scotland before returning as Gippsland Regional Manager for VicForests. In 2005, I was appointed as the Chief Fire Officer responsible for fire management across all of the forested public land (a third of Victoria by area). The state experienced some of its most severe fire years during this time including the Grampians, Great Divide and Black Saturday fires. I set up and led the development of the increased preventative burning program and the enhanced community engagement program. During this time, I chaired COAG’s Forest Fire Management Group and was Board Director for the Bushfire CRC and Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities (AFAC). After finishing full time work, I chaired the ministers Alpine Advisory Committee. Highly experienced in stage and screen mediums; Shamita is a performer who enjoys a challenge. A trained dancer from an early age; after over 16 years of ballet training and a broad range of other dance styles, she developed an interest in theatrical dance forms such as Butoh alongside her acting. She holds a BA Performing Arts from Monash University, supplemented by training with Film & Television Studios International, Stella Adler AoA Los Angeles, AAFTA, and Meisner Technique. As a performing artist her work has travelled across Australia and overseas, from the tropical islands of Guam and Brunei to cosmopolitan Singapore. She often incorporates intercultural practices and cross disciplinary elements into her work, inspired by everyday experiences, music and sound, and socio- political issues she is driven by. Outside of her own projects as a solo artist she performs with Melbourne’s premiere Bollywood troupe Sapphire Dance, where she met collaborator Ida Ghatge. When not on large scale stages and screens, she is an active performer within Australia's queer cabaret scene and is passionate about creating high energy performances with her signature style. Behind the scenes, Shamita is also a writer and director, and is popularly consulted for movement direction. Extensively trained in both Carnatic and Western Classical forms, she uses the violin to express her bicultural identity. She has 15 years of experience across Australia and internationally, with over 300 performances to her name, including shows at some of South India’s oldest and most distinguished music venues. Collaboration is at the heart of Bhairavi’s creative practice. She has produced acclaimed works with local and international artists across disciplines including poetry, spoken word, movement, dance and theatre. Outside of performance, Bhairavi also runs a grassroots not-for-profit organisation called Gamaka, which aims to cultivate engagement in Carnatic music. She also has a broad knowledge of various other world dance forms including Indian folk, Classical Fusion, and Bollywood. Ida also has a range of experience in psychology, writing and public speaking as well having completed her honours in Psychology from the University of Melbourne. Currently, she is undertaking her Masters in Psychology. She volunteers her time with Griefline- a national Australian helpline catered to individuals experiencing the effects of grief,loss, trauma and isolation. She prides her Indian heritage but is passionate about challenging cultural stereotypes, sex based biases and the stigma around mental health in WOC. Learning from her personal struggles, she wishes to empower other women to take charge, and be unapologetically themselves.
