Community forums

HRAFF's Community Forums continue the Festival's theme of presenting everyday human rights issues in an entertaining and accessible manner. The Festival's inaugural Community Forum series provide an opportunity to explore in-depth topics as Australian as sport and food, and how you too can incorporate human rights outcomes in your daily decisions!

INDUSTRY FORUMS

HRAFF's Industry Forums are about up-skilling, networking, and knowledge transfer. Learn how to develop your idea or project to make entertaining films that speak to social conscience. The Industry Forums are also for human rights organisations wanting to learn about the power of new media to catalyse social change, and for members of the general public interested in current industry issues. Featuring key industry figures, including Andrew Apostola (Portable Film Festival) and Steve Warne (Film Victoria) as well as representatives from the Australian Director's Guild, Documentary Australia Foundation, OPEN CHANNEL, Screen Australia, SBS, Oxfam and more.

Heard a lot about the phrase "human rights" but not sure what it actually means? Think it sounds complicated, vaguely legal or confined to Amnesty International press releases? Come along to this fun and informative session where Ben Schokman (Lawyer, Human Rights Law Resource Centre) will explain that human rights are actually very commonplace, ordinary things, and Priyanga Hettiarchi (Governance, Dept. of Premier and Cabinet) will let you know which of these rights are protected under Victorian law and what this means for you.

In an Olympic year, this favorite of topics is back on the scorecard. But just how do the two interact? Can decisions in a sporting context impact on broader society, and what does the sporting discourse contribute to the palladium of human rights? Leading the team to the middle will be award-winning journalist Martin Flanagan, able supported by Australian Homeless World Cup coach George Halkias, nephew of 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games medalist Peter Norman, Matt Norman, and Nick Hatzoglou - Multicultural Project Coordinator for the AFL.

Bite into Rights Food and Human Rights

3:00pm
Sun 16 November, 2008
Kino Cinemas, Melbourne

Surely something as simple as eating doesn't have anything to do with human rights? Think again - whether dining or devouring, the consumption of food and its preceding production are intimately linked to rights issues. Come to this delicious exploration of the topic, hosted by renowned Melbourne food blogger Claire Davie, as we meet Cathy Maguire (Mentor Chef at the Asylum Seeker's Resource Centre Catering Service), and explore issues of education, training, and personal responsibility with Shanaka Fernando ('Lentil as Anything' founder), and food security, fair trade and equity with Jeff Atkinson (Oxfam Australia).
